Press TV on the Iran – Bahrain rapprochement

I make it a rule to accept invitations to discuss some new and important international events only when I have some expertise in the subject at hand. Stick to your knitting! is my operating principle.

Sometimes I have to bend that rule a bit, but then only when my aria from another opera makes sense and adds value to our appreciation of the opera on stage.

I did this yesterday when invited by Press TV, Iran to comment on the just announced rapprochement between Iran and Bahrain. fellow panelist, a true regional specialist on the West Asian region, commented on how this new development is adverse for Israel and the United States, insofar as Bahrain was one of the signatories to the Abraham Accords which aimed not only at normalization of relations between the Arab neighbors and Israel but also at building a solid wall against Iran’s influence in the region.

My contribution to the discussion came from a different context: viewing this latest development as proof that the foreign policy of restraint and moderation that was overseen by the late Iranian president Raisi is alive and well in the foreign policy of his immediate successors.  And I place that policy of moderation in the context of Iran’s full membership of BRICS, where Saudi Arabia is now also an influential member; by Iran’s being bracketed by Russia and China, building the country’s self-esteem and confidence as it moves in the international arena.
